As luck would have it, I was born on the island of Maui and grew up in a busy picture framing shop run by my parents. From the blanket-lined box beneath my mom’s work table I watched the daily transformation of wood, canvas, paper and glass. Spectacular oil paintings came in through the door and went back out in flashy lacquer and koa wood frames.

In this setting I developed a love of drawing and painting at an early age. By elementary school I was allowed to cut matboard into pieces and design my own art projects in the midst of a fun-loving group of employees. My childhood summers revolved around The Shop. It was a creative place where I was free to work with my hands and view exceptional works of art. After high school I attended The University of Puget Sound and earned a B.A. in 2001.

After four years of studying English and Art History in the Pacific Northwest I followed my love of art back home to Maui and became a commercial picture framer until 2009 when my parents entered a well-deserved retirement.

Today The Shop is a quieter place where I go to paint and assemble frames for my artwork. I hope it will continue to be the site of creative endeavors for my parents and my own children.

The paintings I am presenting at this point in my career are an exploration of color and pastel techniques. You may notice several distinct styles of mark-making including hatch marks, circles, and square patches of color. These experiments often result in a “series” of paintings focusing on a particular style, color relationship or subject.

My current work has arrived at the intersection of nature and daily life. Although I started out painting landscapes, I’ve been taking a closer look at my surroundings and exploring the beauty of ordinary objects through color and light.

Most importantly, my goal is to represent a scene honestly while leaving enough space for personal interpretation. If I can approach a scene that is familiar – perhaps only to me – and create a painting that evokes a memory held within another person’s mind then I feel that I have succeeded.
